Reno Turkia
09/09/2008
Prominent Georgian artist Reno Turkia was born in Sukhumi on 11 August, 1926.
He finished School #1 in Tbilisi in 1934.
The young artist brought his paintings to public attention for the first time at a republican exhibition of young artists in 1941, which earned him substantial success.
In 1956 he graduated from Tbilisi Academy of Art.
During the period of his studies at the Academy, he was actively engaged in scientific and research activities.
From 1956 Reno Turkia took an active part in various exhibitions both in Georgia and beyond its borders.
From 1959 until his death on 14 January, 1979 he was a professor of the Tbilisi Academy of Art.
He was buried at the Saburtalo Pantheon of Prominent Georgian Figures of Arts and Culture.
“One of the chief goals of my work is to bring forth the beauty I perceive in everything…
… in the paints, a grand expressive force is lurking in these wonderful solutions…but however wonderful or powerful the colour might be, it loses all sense if it serves ugliness or else cannot convey a meaningful message and thereby turns into a formal representation of the picture.”
Reno Turkia
Reno Turkia was immeasurably enamoured of life and relished in every waking day, in the rising sun. He transferred the impressions he received from the outside world onto the canvas in a versatile manner, inspiring it with spirit. He found appropriate expressive ways and nuances in each phenomenon. Through one ordinary instance he could experience the whole world and let others experience the same – whether it was the whimsies of nature, rain or wind, the beclouded sky or a tiny glimmering section of it, a landscape or a cityscape, portrait of a friend or a total stranger – the painter created everything with immense love and generously was informed with a part of his soul.
Ketevan Tomaradze
“In his short life Reno earned an overall love among the people who perceive art to be an inseparable element of individuality. He was a man of high morals: tactful, reserved, good-natured and polite.”
Elguja Amashukeli
“While we were still taking small playful steps to becoming the men of letters or of arts, our peer Reno Turkia was already an accomplished artist. He partook of the divine academy of talent while still being a child.”
Rezo Tabukashvili
“Reno never pursued simple ways. He always aspired to the extraordinary as if by that he wished to share with us some
mystery …”
Merab Berdzenishvili
“Reno’s pictures transports our consciousness into a parallel world, thereby demonstrating the existence in all its splandour and beauty. Like the art of Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky or other geniuses, Reno's art too possesses healing qualities…
I want to thank the Georgian people for giving such son to the world.”
